Developer Black Matter has finally released the long awaited Hell Let Loose Update 3, which includes the iconic Omaha Beach map as the first example of their new "Offensive" game mode. This mode is essentially similar to Attack and Defend modes of other games, but with a twist: Instead of only having to take two points to push the enemy back, attackers have to take two paired points at each stage or risk losing their progress. The game starts with a relatively limited time to capture the first pair of points, but resets to 30 minutes each time a stage is taken.
In my experience, this paired-capture mechanic coupled with the timer reset makes for some seriously intense moments where attackers have just minutes to take the last point and throw their whole weight into the offense while defenders cling to a precarious position, praying the timer runs out before they are overrun. That is some seriously fantastic gameplay.
This video chronicles my first game of Omaha Beach Offensive mode. Seeing our team lacked a Commanding Officer, I stepped up to coordinate the attack. Luckily, by the time I hit the beach the initial sandbar had been captured, but we had to fight to push up the immense hills and move inland. Once we captured the first pair, however, we found that the Germans had entrenched themselves in the nearby villages and made us pay for every inch in blood. Serious kudos to the German tankers who managed to stymie our every advance. That said, our troops fought valiantly and I would gladly go to war again with any of them.
